At MamaOm we believe in giving back. But sometimes is hard to find the right place to give. After a lot of research we are happy to say MamaOm is a proud member of 1% for the planet. Their mission is: “Use market forces to drive positive environmental change by inspiring companies to give.”

And that is not all. We wanted to do more so we decided to partner with Yachana Foundation and give them 4% of our profits.

Over the last 16 years, the YACHANA FOUNDATION (formally FUNEDESIN) has generated and invested approximately 5.2 million dollars in the Ecuadorian Amazon. This investment of time and resources has underwritten many triumphs, some of which you can read about in these pages. We are truly an integrated development organization involved in many different aspects all designed to improve the lives of the people and protect the environment. We use an unusual development model of non-profit / for-profit where the Foundation owns two for- profit companies, Yachana Lodge and Yachana Gourmet. We are involved in Geotourism, education, agriculture, health, income generation and technical assistance.

Damagua and Tagua?
Have you heard the words Tagua and Damagua? These two words sound like the names of twin sisters living in some exotic country in South America. You could say they are sisters and they do live in South America, but they are not human. Tagua and Damagua are two sustainable materials found in Ecuador (and other South American countries) that are used by indigenous people on a regular basis. As the threat of deforestation grows upon the Amazon and all their adjacent forests we at MamaOm have decided to start using local and sustainable materials in our clothing lines. We think that by using these materials we ensure the future of the tropical rainforests.
Damagua, a sustainable fiber has the look of animal skin and a different type of texture. It is in many of our handbags; by using it we support rural communities living near tropical rainforests. The fiber is the crust of the Damagua tree bark which is peeled when the moon is on its third quarter. Once they have the crust, they stretch it and start working on it by hand, they wash it in the river and then start hammering it with a special hammer, until the fiber is stretched out and flat. The process is all done by hand, and is very time consuming, but the final product is amazing, durable and super trendy. Look in our accessories section to find many handbags made out of Damagua and other eco-friendly materials.

Its coming soon. In September 2008 we will launch our basics line, and we will take it from there. We are really excited about this, we believe organic is the way to go. And even tough most people have the assumption organic means more expensive we are ready to prove you all wrong. Organic means better quality, means a cleaner fabric no pesticides or yucky chemicals, only pure, soft and comfortable cotton. And most importantly organic means the Mother Earth was taken into account while making the organic item you have on your hands. So get ready, MamaOm is launching its mommy and me apparel line.

When I went to pick up my mail today I was just looking to empty my mailbox, but oh I got a great surprise. When I got back to the ofc. and started looking through what I had gotten, there was this handwritten envelope with really cute handwriting that immediately caught my eye.As I opened it I could not stop my self from screaming a big YES! My favorite Olympic Athlete Summer Sanders, sent us a note thanking us for her Mommy and Me bikini set for her and her daughter, and a set of organic cotton t-s for her and her new baby boy!I got the chance to meet Summer Sanders at the Boom Boom Room in NYC, and she was so nice and down to earth. She just talked about her kids, and how much her little girl would love wearing bikinis like that looked like hers.Getting a hand written note from her was such a nice and uplifting surprise. It is so nice, well is the BEST feeling in the world when I know my designs are making people smile! That makes it all worth it, when times get tough between the midst of crazy e-mails, talking to manufacturers, designing a new line, and taking care of my girls it is just refreshing and invigorating to get thank you notes from people that absolutely love what we are doing. Thanks, and keep them coming! :0)

We have not been bloging that much lately, time flies by specially when we have so- so Oh! So Very Many things in our to-do list. We are really happy to announce our Mommy and Me organic cotton basics line will launch on Sept 2008. We are really excited, we have amazing pieces for this line. We have developed a line that will include basic items which we found are useful, comfortable and trendy. We all know how hard it is to get dress, look good and feel good at the same time. The idea behind our collection is Moms and Girls will be able to dress alike while feeling comfortable, and very importantly while being environmentally conscious.We believe mommy and me not only enhances the bond between mothers and daughter, but by wearing organic clothing you are teaching your kids to respect and value the environment. Is part of being a mom to show them they have options, and that with the choices they make they will be able to make a difference for better or worse. Hopefully always for the Better!

So two weeks ago we get an e-mail inviting MamaOm to the Boom Boom Room in NYC. We were so excited to receive the invitation, and even though the event was only days away we decided to attend!The past weeks have been very hectic-crazy (good crazy). So many things happening at our company, so many e-mails, and getting prepared for the Boom Boom Room.Attending and participating in the Boom Boom Room was such a cool experience! We got to meet so many people of the industry, who are on the same path as we are, who are working hard to get their name out-there, who really believe in what they are doing!But the most fun part was seeing the reaction MamaOm’s mommy and me bikini collection  got from everybody. It was so nice to hear how cute, and trendy our designer bikinis are; and even better getting so many smiles from those who received our bikinis and t-shirts as gifts. It was awesome! We have been working so hard on this dream, which was an idea, a became company, and now a business.So many late nights, no lunch, working through my daughters naps and into the wee hours of the night. Getting to see the reaction of so many people at the same time felt soooo GOOOD! Everyone, absolutely everyone loved the idea, the theme, the vibe, the designs. I couldn’t be happier, and I am so thankful for this.Here are some pictures of some of the celebs that fell in love with MamaOm! Maggie Rodriguez fell in love with our Mommy and Me time out set. Brian Schneider from the NY Mets, his wife and little girl loved our organic cotton t-shirts!Jane Notar (wife of Nobu managing partner Richie Notar) fell in love with our mommy and me bikini collection. She got our funky animal in fucsia for her and her daughter Harlow. She told she will be using it on her trip to St. Tropez on the following weeks! Olympic Swimmer Summer Sanders loved our bikinis, specially the sunshine hearts in orange.And even though Lindsey Rodrigues from MTV is still not a mom, she liked our beachwear line, specially the one piece in funky animal fucsia!

So here in Florida is getting pretty hot already, and the summer is just beginning!!! For my girls and I summer is the perfect excuse to have some cold and sweet ice cream. Even though ice cream is super sweet, it always lingers in my mind all those extra minutes I will have to run the next day to burn those more-than-extra calories (don’t we all think about that!!!) But now there is an extra good, green and cool reason to have some savory ice cream this summer. Haagen-Dazs is teaming up with researchers to find out the reason why honey bees are dissappearing at such alarming rates!!!! Yes they are! I had noticed the prices on 100% pure natural honey where going up (I have always relied on honey as a natural remedy: great for sore throats, coughs, scrapes, etc). And I had also heard about the bee’s populations getting smaller, but I had no clue the numbers where getting so SMALL.
